Game of Thrones fans were impatiently waiting to see their Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke, in a movie that is based on Jojo Moyes’ bestseller “Me Before You”. Daenerys Targaryen fans did not have an opportunity to see their heroine on the big screen so far. Hopefully, this movie will be Clarke’s big break. Jojo’s romantic drama has driven thousands of female readers crazy. A filthy-rich man, with almost no emotions, somehow finds himself in a relationship with an unsophisticated, modest, young woman who is willing to take care of all of his needs. What started off as a business proposition starts to grow into a deeply personal connection. Sounds familiar?
The short introduction may remind you of “Fifty Shades of Gray,” but “Me Before You” is nothing like that. This movie is a classic Hollywood prototype of a love story that will make all the ladies sob while watching it.
Yes ladies, you read that right. If you want to watch this movie, brace yourselves and bring Kleenex with you. This glossy adaptation of Moyes’ novel is an unbelievable tear-provoking tool. The reason behind it is the spark between Emilia Clarke and the iconic Claflin. They both manage to rise above characters that were at first gender color-coded and from different social classes.
However, the alluring chemistry between Clarke and Claflin is simply not enough to compensate for the clumsy treatment of a sensitive subject. “Me Before You” received incredibly negative reviews from disabled people. Apparently, they believe that the movie sends a message that people with disabilities are a burden on their families and careers, and are better off dead.
But, making a movie absolutely everyone will love is almost impossible. The downside of the movie we have mentioned still didn’t stop it from great ratings and so many views. The fact that the movie came out during the summer blockbuster season and that it was aimed at females allowed this movie to over-perform. Why? Mostly because of the fact that at this time of the year cinemas are filled with action movies or cartoons.
The movie grossed $1.4 million from its Thursday night previews and $7.8 million on its first day. With the budget of $20 million, the movie has grossed a total of $182.2 million. We would say that it was pretty successful, wasn’t it?
Behind the scenes, Jojo Moyes revealed that she knew Emilia Clarke was the right choice for Louise Clark as soon as she saw her. Moyes believes that these two do not only share the same last name but that there is a very fine line between Louisa Clark and Emilia Clarke.
“But then when I met her in the flesh, as you can see, Emilia is just this cute, funny, quirky [girl]. She’s just a little powerhouse with that megawatt smile. As soon as I met her, I was like ‘there’s Louisa. That’s the one.”
